If $f (x) = 3 x^{4} - 5 x^{2} + 9$ , find f(x - 1).

Solution

We have $f (x) = 3 x^{4} - 5 x^{2} + 9$

$∴ f (x - 1) = 3 (x - 1)^{4} - 5 (x - 1)^{2} + 9$

$= 3 (x^{4} - 4 x^{3} + 6 x^{2} - 4 x + 1) - 5 (x^{2} - 2 x + 1) + 9$

$= 3 x^{4} - 12 x^{3} + 18 x^{2} - 12 x + 3 - 5 x^{2} + 10 x - 5 + 9$

$= 3 x^{4} - 12 x^{3} + 13 x^{2} - 2 x + 7$
