Question

If oxidation state of elements oxygen and fluorine in OF2 molecule is... -1 for fluorine and +2 for Oxygen... Then what is the oxidation state for the elements fluorine in an F2 molecule?

Solution

Generally molecules will have a net charge of zero.

F2 contains two F atoms.
Let the oxidation state of F atom be x .

Molecule have met charge of zero.
Therefore,
2x=0
 x=0

So,oxidation state of F in F2 is zero.

Generally, oxidation state of an element in a a diatomic molecule is zero.
[Eg:O in O2, H in H2 etc]
