Let expenditure of each company be $x$ lakh.

$\begin{array}{c}40=\frac{l_1-x}{x}\times 100\\ \therefore l_1=1.4x\\ Similarly,45=\frac{l_2-x}{x}\times 100\\ l_2=1.45x\\ l_1+l_2=5.7\\ \Rightarrow 1.4x+1.45x=5.7\Rightarrow x=2\end{array}$

Total expenditure of two companies $=2x=2\times 2=4$ lakh
