Question

If the polynomial $$\left( { x }^{ 4 }+{ 2x }^{ 3 }+{ 8x }^{ 2 }+12x+18 \right) $$ is divided by $$\left( { x }^{ 2 }+5 \right), $$ the remainder comes out to be $$(px+q)$$,find the value of $$p$$ and $$q$$.


Solution

$$x^2+5)x^4+2x^3+8x^2+12x+18(x^2+2x+3$$
            $$x^4$$       $$5x^2$$
            _____________________
                    $$2x^3+3x^2$$
                    $$2x^3+10x$$
                    ______________
                               $$3x^2+2x$$
                               $$3x^2+15$$
                             _____________
                                          $$2x+3$$
$$2x+3=p\ast +q$$
$$p=2$$
$$q=3$$.
