Question

If the surface tension of water is $$0.06Nm^{-1}$$ then the capillary rise in a tube of diameter $$1 mm$$ is$$(\theta =0^{o})$$:

A
3.86cm
loader
B
3.12cm
loader
C
2.4cm
loader
D
1.22cm
loader

Solution

The correct option is C $$2.4 cm$$
Diameter $$d = 1mm$$ then,

radius $$r=\dfrac { 1 }{ 2 } mm=\dfrac { 1 }{ 2 } \times { 10 }^{ -3 }m$$

By using rise in capillary tube formula $$ h = \dfrac{2T cos\theta}{\rho gr}$$
$$ h = \dfrac{2 (0.06) (1)}{1000 \times \dfrac{1}{2} \times 10^{-3} \times 10}$$      (since cos $$0^o = 1$$)

$$ h = \dfrac{12}{5} \times 10^{-2}$$

Therefore, $$h = 2.4 cm$$
Option C is correct.
