Question

If white light is used in a Young’s double - slit experiment. Point C represents centre of a screen.

  1. Bright white fringe is formed at the centre of the screen.
  2. Fringe closest to either side of centre of the screen is red.
  3. Fringe closest to either side of centre of the screen is violet.
  4. After few fringes, no clear fringe pattern is seen.

Solution

The correct options are
A Bright white fringe is formed at the centre of the screen.
C Fringe closest to either side of centre of the screen is violet.
D After few fringes, no clear fringe pattern is seen.
As path difference for central fringe is zero, it will always be bright. Since violet has less wavelength, fringe closest to either side of centre of the screen is violet.
