If y is a positive number, what is the value of y?
I. |y - 4| = 3
II. y2=y+6
If the question can be answered by any one of the statements alone, but cannot be answered by using the other statement alone.
y > 0
Statement (I): |y - 4| = 3
∴ y could be 1 or 7.
∴ Statement (I) alone is not sufficient.
Statement (II):
y2=y+6y2−y−6=0(y−3)(y+2)=0∴ y−3=0 or y+2=0y=3 or y=−2
As y is positive => y = 3
Statement (II) alone is sufficient.
