Solution

When we see our image in a mirror, following steps occur:
  1. Light from a source falls on the face.
  2. Our face reflects (diffused reflection) light in all directions.
  3. Reflected light from the face falls on the mirror and is reflected back.
  4. When light reflected from mirror reaches our eyes, we see our face.
When the room is dark, where no light source exists, step 1 does not happen and hence, we cannot see our reflection in the mirror.
