In crossed Cannizzaro reaction between formaldehyde and benzaldehyde the alcohol formed is only benzyl alcohol and not methanol. Give reason.

Because the initial nucleophilic addition of hydroxide ion is faster on formaldehyde as there are no electron donating group on it, as benzene is a electron donating group that's why the preferential oxidation of form aldehyde takes place.
