In the figure shown below, acceleration of block A is 1 m/s2 upwards, acceleration of block B is 7 m/s2 upwards and acceleration of block C is 2 m/s2 upwards. Then what will be the acceleration of block D? Assume that the pulleys are frictionless and strings are inextensible.

The correct option is C 10 m/s2 downwards

Taking upward acceleration positive and downward negative.
Let the acceleration of pulley P and Q be aP and aQ respectively.
Acceleration of block A, aA=1 m/s2
Acceleration of block B, aB=7 m/s2
Acceleration of block C, aC=2 m/s2
Acceleration of block D =aD
Now aP=aA+aB2
aP=1+72=4 m/s2 Upwards
Since string is inextensible, length remains same.
Therefore acceleration of pulley Q, aQ=4 m/s2
Also aQ=aC+aD2
4=2+aD2
aD=10 m/s2
Since acceleration is negative, therefore downwards.
