Reduce its melting point


Bauxite is the oxide ore of Aluminum. Extraction is done through electrolysis for which bauxite should conduct electricity. It doesn't conduct electricity in solid form so it need to be melted. But it has very high melting point. So cryolite is added to reduce the melting point and thus making the process more economical.
