Question

In what ratio is the line segment joining (2,1) and (1,7) divided by the line x+y=10?

Open in App
Solution

The given line is x+y=10 ..........(1)

Let the line (1) divide the line segment joining the point (2,1) and (1,7) at the point P in the ratio k:1 then the co-ordinates of point P are

(k2k+1,7k+1k+1)

Since P lies on (1), we get k2k+1+7k+1k+1=10

k27k+1=10k+10

8k1=10k+10

18k=11

k=1118

Hence, the required ratio is 1118:1 or 11:8 externally.
