Question

In which cell structure are ribosomes produced?

Open in App
Solution

Ribosomes: -

  1. Site of protein synthesis in the cells.
  2. Made up of RNA and proteins and therefore called ribonucleoprotein, and are found in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
  3. Synthesized in the nucleolus, a region within the cell nucleus.
  4. These can be of two types -
    1. 70S ribosomes occur in prokaryotic cells and
    2. 80S ribosomes that occur in eukaryotic cells.

The primary function performed by ribosomes is :

  1. It reads the mRNA sequence and translates the genetic code into an amino acid sequence.
  2. These amino acid sequences are converted into long chains that fold to form proteins.
  3. These proteins help in carrying out cellular functions.
