Question

Ionic compounds are soluble in water. Explain.

Open in App
Solution

Part 1: Polar Molecule:

  1. The molecule formed as a result of a significant electronegative difference between the atoms of the molecule.
  2. This difference in electronegativity creates a partial charge on the atoms, making them polar. e.g. H2O
  3. Polar molecules possess a strong force of attraction.

Part 2: Solubility of Ionic Compounds in water.

Water is a polar solvent.

  1. Polar Solvent H2O dissociates the ionic compound by interacting with the charged ions and pulls them with a strong force of attraction. As a result, the electrostatic force between the ionic compounds decreases and thus makes them soluble in water.
