Is the impulse a force?

An impulse is related to force. It is equal to $F\dot{}t$, a force multiplied by the length of time the force was applied.

Impulse is also equal to change in momentum caused by the impulse. So you can say that

force $\times$ the time the force was applied $=m\dot{}(v-u)$

So if you know the change in momentum and time of contact, you can calculate the average force applied.
