___ is the property by which biological systems maintain a stable internal environment.

Solution

Homeostasis is a property of many organisms by which they maintain a stable and constant internal environment in response to external changes. This is achieved through control systems in the body that operate by means of a feedback mechanism. For instance, the human body temperature is maintained at around 98.6℉ irrespective of whether the season is summer or winter. Sweating in the summer and shivering in the winter are obvious ways by which the human body regulates its temperature. Likewise, the human body has “sensors” that can monitor the blood pressure, water content, salt content and so on in the body.
