Question

Luminosity of  Rigel star in Orion , constellation is 17000 times that of our sun .If the surface temperature   of the sun  is 6000 K , calculate the temperature of the star .


Solution

According to Stefan's law
$$ E = \sigma T^{4} $$
$$ \therefore    \dfrac{E_{R}}{E_{S}} = \dfrac{T^{4}_{R}}{T^{4}_{S}} = \left ( \dfrac{T_{R}}{T_{S}} \right )^{4} $$
 Given, $$ E_{R} = 17000 E_{S} ;T_{S} = 6000K ; T_{R}= ?$$
$$\therefore  \dfrac{17000E_{S}}{E_{S}} = \left ( \dfrac{T_{R}}{6000} \right )^{4}$$
or$$ \dfrac{T_{R}}{6000} = \left ( 17000 \right )^{1/4} = 11. 41858 $$
$$\therefore T_{R} = 11.41858 \times 6000 $$
$$ 68511 . 5 K $$
$$ = 68512 K $$
