Before computing LXXXIV - XLVIII , we convert the Roman numerals into Hindu-Arabic numerals.

LXXXIV = 50 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 5 - 1 = 84
XLVIII = 50 - 10 + 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 48

Thus, LXXXIV - XLVIII = 84 - 48 = 36.
But, 36 = 30 + 6 = XXX + VI = XXXVI.

That is, LXXXIV - XLVIII = XXXVI = 36.
