Question

Make a sketch of the human muscle cell. What function do muscle cells perform?

Open in App
Solution

There are three types of muscles in the human body:

A. Skeletal muscles:

Structure:

  1. These muscles are attached to the skeleton and help in its movement.
  2. These muscles are also known as striated muscles because of the presence of alternate patterns of light and dark bands.
  3. The cells of these tissues are multinucleated.

Diagram:

Function:

  1. These are responsible for the voluntary movements of the body.
  2. These are attached to the skeleton system and responsible for the movement of the boned.

B. Smooth muscles:

Structure:

  1. These are non-striated, involuntary muscles controlled by the Autonomous Nervous System.
  2. No striations are found.
  3. The cells are spindle-shaped.
  4. Single nucleus is found.

Function:

  1. It stimulates the contractility of the digestive, urinary, reproductive systems, blood vessels, and airways.
  2. It is responsible for all involuntary movements of the body.

C. Cardiac muscles:

Structure:

  1. These are involuntary muscles and are present in heart.
  2. They are single-celled and uninucleate.
  3. The ends of the cells are joined, and the junctions are called intercalated discs.
  4. The cells are attached to each other by desmosomes.

Function:

  1. These are responsible for the rhythmic contraction and expansion of the walls of the heart.
  2. These help in pumping blood.
