In simple terms, flux is a substance added to remove the impurities from the ore (or the metal surface). Usually, it forms a coating so that the reduced metal - often present in the fused state - doesn't get exposed to oxidizing agents. This is so that the metal doesn't get converted back into oxides etc. Basic fluxes combine with acidic impurities and vice versa.

SiO2 is an acidic flux whereas CaO and MgO are basic fluxes. Usually, flux combines with gangue to form slag.

In the exttraction of iron, line stone added gets decomposed into line and carbon dioxide. The lime combined with silica impurities to form CaSiO3.
In the extraction of copper, FeS is convertedto FeO, which gets converted into FeSiO3 by silica blasted in during the smelting (Bessemer converter).
