Gametes are haploid sex cells. Homogametes are those gametes which are morphologically similar. They are also known as isogametes. For example, in Cladophora, the fusing gametes are similar, thus making it difficult to categorise them into male and female gametes.


In majority of organisms, two different types of gametes are produced which differ in structure. These are called heterogametes. The male gamete in this case is generally called an antherozoid or sperm. The female gamete is called an egg or ovum.
