In suspension, organisms enter a state of dormancy, and exhibit periods of inactivity and lowered metabolic rates. The following are the types of suspension carried out by organisms:
Hibernation: Animals like polar bears and frog go into a state of inactive and metabolic depression during winter to avoid cold. This behaviour is known as hibernation.
Aestivation: On the other, some snails and fish go into an inactive state to avoid summer related problems like heat and dessication. This behaviour is known as aestivation.
Diapause: Under unfavourable conditions, many zooplankton species enter into a stage of suspension development called diapause.
