  1. Respiration in insects such as cockroaches, houseflies, butterflies, etc., occurs through a tracheal system.
  2. The tracheal system connects with the external environment through tiny pores on the insect’s abdomen and thorax called spiracles.
  3. A pair of spiracles are present on each body segment.
  4. The air enters the spiracles connected to the tracheal chamber, which branch out into tracheoles that deliver the oxygen directly to every part of the body.
  5. The expansion and contraction of the abdomen allow the gaseous exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
(b). Earthworm (iv). Skin
  1. The skin of the earthworms feels moist.
  2. That is why they are called slimy creatures.
  3. The reason behind their moist skin is that earthworm’s breathing organ is their skin.
  4. Air can easily pass through the skin of an earthworm.
  5. The exchange of gases usually takes place through its moist skin and capillaries.
  6. In these regions the oxygen gas is picked up by the haemoglobin dissolved in the blood and carbon dioxide is released out.
