Outermost thick protective layer of the leaf is called upper epidermis. It secretes cuticle which prevents the excess loss of water from the plants.
Below upper epidermis lies cells which are specialised for photosynthesis called mesophyll cells.
Some of the mesophyll cells are cylindrical in shape and are compactly arranged. They are called palisade parenchyma.
The ones which are circular or oval and loosely arranged are called spongy parenchyma.
Just like upper epidermis, thick protective layer is present on the lower surface called the lower epidermis.
