Gymnosperms have a dominant diploid sporophytic generation. So, the life cycle is said to be diplontic. The sporophytes produce two types of spores, so are heterosporous. Microspores give rise to male gametes and megaspores give rise to female gametes.
Both microspores and megaspores are produced within sporangia borne on sporopghylls arranged apirally along the axis to form a compact strobili, also called cones.
