Question

Mohl’s half leaf experiment is to prove that
  1. oxygen is released during photosynthesis
  2. carbon dioxide is necessary for photosynthesis
  3. light is essential for photosynthesis
  4. chlorophyll is essential for photosynthesis

Solution

The correct option is B carbon dioxide is necessary for photosynthesis
Mohl destarched the plant and inserted the half of the leaf attached to plant in a beaker containing KOH whereas other half remained exposed to the air.
On performing starch test he found that the part of leaf which was exposed to air turns bluish-black, whereas one which was inserted in beaker turns brown instead of becomes blue-black.
Thus, he concluded that carbon dioxide is necessary for photosynthesis.
