Question

n×1027 photons of wavelength λ=6600 nm must strike a totally reflecting surface per second at normal incidence to exert a force of 1 N. The value n is (integer only)

Solution

Given,

λ=6600 nm ; F=1 N

When radiation normal incident on a surface perfectly reflecting surface, the magnitude of momentum delivered to the surface is,

ΔP=2Ec=2nhλ [ E=nhcλ]

Let n be the number of photons falling per second on the surface, then force exerted on it will be,

F=ΔPΔt=2nhλ

n=Fλ2h=1×6600×1092×6.6×1034=5×1027

Hence, n=5
