Solution

(i) On heating, cupric oxide, ferric oxide, zinc oxide get reduced to copper, iron, zinc metals respectively, in the presence of carbon as a reducing agent.

2CuO + C Heat 2Cu + CO2Cupric oxide Carbon Copper Carbon dioxide Fe2O3 + 3C Heat 2Fe + 3CO Ferric oxide Carbon Iron Carbon monoxide 2ZnO + C Heat 2Zn + CO2Zinc oxide Carbon Zinc Carbon dioxide

(ii) Aluminium oxide undergoes electrolysis and forms aluminium at the cathode and oxygen at the anode.

Al2O3 Electrolysis 2Al3+ + 3O2-Atcathode: Al3+ + 3e- Al (reduction)At anode: 2O2- O2 + 4e-

(iii) When mercuric oxide is heated strongly, it decomposes to form mercury and liberates oxygen.

2HgO DecomposeHeat Hg + O2Mercuric oxide Mercury Oxygen gas
2HgO DecomposeHeat 2Hg + 2
