Some of the green house gases are $C O_{2}$ , $N_{2} O$ , methane, water vapor etc. These green house gases absorb the infrared radiations and re-emit them back to the surface of earth. this makes the earth to remain warm, otherwise without green house gases the earth would be a cold planet. But excessive presence of green house gases also effect the earth's climate in a bad way. It increases the overall temperature of earth which results in global warming.
