Plants cannot utilise the atmospheric nitrogen directly. Free nitrogen in the atmoshpere is converted into ammonia by nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Then, ammonia is converted into nitrites and nitrates by the process of nitrification by nitrifying bacteria. Nitrate is usually the form of nitrogen which can be directly absorbed by the plants.
