In figure (a), the volume of the lungs is increasing as the diaphragm is going down and ribs are moving out, this causes air from outside to move inside the lungs. This process is called inhalation.
In figure (b), the volume of the lungs is decreasing as the diaphragm is going up and ribs are moving inside, this causes air from inside the lungs to move outside the lungs. This process is called exhalation.
