Question

__ occurs when the vapour pressure of the salt is much lower as compared to the atmospheric vapour pressure.

Solution

Certain water- soluble substances, when exposed to the atmosphere at ordinary temperature, absorb moisture from the atmospheric air to become moist, and ultimately dissolve in the absorb water, forming a saturated solution.Such substance is called deliquescent substance and the phenomenon is called deliquescence. E.g., caustic soda, caustic potash, zinc chloride, etc.

Deliquescence occurs when the vapour pressure of the salt is much lower as compared to the atmospheric vapour pressure. Thus, deliquescence is minimized during dry conditions.
