Question

On an extremely hot day, the rate of transpiration is:
  1. nil
  2. maximum
  3. lesser compared to a cold day
  4. unaffected

Solution

The correct option is B maximum
The rate of transpiration depends on several environmental factors namely, atmospheric pressure, CO2 level, light intensity, wind velocity, etc.
Temperature is one of the major factors in affecting the transpiration rate. With the increase in the ambient temperature, the surrounding air will become warmer. Warm air can hold more water as compared to less warm or cold air. As a result, the evaporation will increase, resulting in maximum water loss on an extremely hot day as compared to a lesser hot day or cold day.
