It depends on the material because different materials have different arrangement of atoms. Hence, due to rise in temperature they expand in different ways according to the arrangement and constituent of the atoms in the particular material. The more the length of the material, the more is the increase in length with the same increase in temperature. When rods of same material and of equal lengths are heated through different rise in temperatures, it is found that increase in the length is more if more is the rise in temperature. The increase in the length of a rod is found to be directly proportional to the increase in its temperature.
