Question

On heating calcium carbonate gets converted into calcium oxide and carbon dioxide. Can you prepare one acidic and one basic solution by using the products formed in the above process? If so, write the chemical equation involved.

Solution

Acidic and basic solutions can be prepared by dissolving the products of the above process in water.
Calcium oxide will form a basic solution.
$$CaO + H_{2}O \rightarrow Ca(OH)_{2}$$ (Basic solution)
Carbon dioxide will form an acidic solution.
$$C0_{2} + H_{2}0 \rightarrow H_{2}CO_{3}$$ (Acidic solution)
