Question

On mixing, heptane and octane form an ideal solution. At 373 K, the vapour pressure of the two liquid components (heptane and octane) are 105 kPa and 45 kPa respectively. Vapour pressure of the solution obtained by mixing 25 g of heptane and 35 g of octane will be : (molar mass of heptane = 100 g mol2 and of octane = 114 g mol1)

Solution

The correct option is B 72kPa
Heptane A, nA=25100=0.25 mol

Octane B, nB=35114=0.31 mol

xA=nAnA+nB=0.250.25+0.31=0.45

xB=0.55

Now,
pT=p0AxA+p0BxB

pT=105×0.45+45×0.55

pT=72 kPa
