Calculate the number of molecules in 0.02339g of chloroform.

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Molar mass of Chloroform CHCl3 = 12+ 1+ 3(35.5) = 119.5g/mol

Note, Molar mass = 1 mole

1 mole contains = 6.022 × 1023 molecules of CHCl3

119.5 g chloroform contains = 6.022 × 1023 molecules of CHCl3

1g chloroform contains = 6.022 × 1023 / 119.5 molecules of CHCl3

0.02339 g chloroform contains = 6.022 × 1023 × 0.02339 / 119.5 molecules of CHCl3

= 0.1408/ 119.5 = 0.001178 × 1023

= 1.178 × 1020 molecules of CHCl3

Hence, 0.02339 g chloroform contains 1.178 × 1020 molecules of CHCl3
