Question

Calculate the percentage of isotopes of neon which ishaving average atomic mass of 20.2 and the isotopes have the mass numbers 20 and 22.

Open in App
Solution

Let the abundance of Ne-20 be X.
Thus the abundance of Ne-22 = 1-X,

Now,
(20) x X + 22 x (1-X) = 20.2
20X + (22 - 22X) = 20.2

Rearranging,
2X = 22- 20.2 = 1.8
X = 0.90
Convering to % by multiplying by 100 = 90% of Ne-20

and 1-X = 0.1 i.e. 10 % of Ne-22
