Do the international organisations like UN and IMF function in a democratic way ?
Hi Student,
The following is the answer to your question.
The international organizations like UN and IMF do not function in a democratic way as the division of power is heavily skewed in favour of rich and powerful countries.
In the IMF, the vote of each member is accorded weightage in proportion to its contribution to the IMF. This means that seven rich countries, US, Japan, France, UK, Russia, China and Saudi Arabia have half of the voting power while the remaining 166 member countries have little power in decision making.
The same principle is applied to the UN as well. The Security Council of the UN, which takes crucial decisions on international affairs, has five permanent members and other non-permanent members. The permanent members have veto power which gives them immense authority to influence the action taken by UN to resolve conflicts.Hope this provides a solution to your query.
Best Wishes.
