Open in App
Solution

Let us take a look at the table given below to study the differences between fertilizer and manure.

Fertilizer

Manure

1. They are inorganic salts.

2. They are manufactured in factories.

1. They are natural substances made from decomposed residue of plants and animal waste.

2. They are prepared in fields.

(b) The two advantages of manure are:
  1. They add humus to soil.
  2. They do not cause any pollution.
(c)

Increase in the use of fertilizers have various negative effects on the soil of the area where they are applied. Some of the ways in which they harm the soil fertility are:

1) They alter the soil chemistry and may make the soil acidic or alkaline which adversely affects the soil.

2) They are non biodegradable, hence excessive use leads to soil pollution.

3) They destroy the life present in soil. Excessive amounts kill the bacteria and other decomposers present in soil which are involved in increasing the fertility of the soil by making humus. Therefore, fertility of soil goes down as no more organic matter is there.
