Litmus solution: It is obtained from lichens and is used as an pH indicator to check whether a solution is acidic or basic in nature.

We use two different litmus paper to detect acidic and basic solution, these are: red and blue litmus paper.

• Blue litmus paper is used to detect acidic solution, because acid changes the color of litmus paper from blue to red.
• Red litmus paper is used to detect basic solution, because base changes color of red litmus paper to blue.
