Alia was making tea in a kettle. Suddenly she felt intense heat from the kettle from the spout of the kettle. She wondered whether the temperature of the steam was higher than that of the water boiling in the kettle. Comment?

Solution

Steam contains higher latent heat of vaporization [the heat which the boiling water absorb to get converted to vapour (steam) at the boiling point of water. Therefore, boiling temperature of steam is same as that of boiling water.

But since the steam has higher latent heat of vaporization which causes heat in surrounding and causes severe burns.
