Question

Why is +3 the main oxidation state for actinoids?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

The sum of the first three ionization energies for each element of actinides is low. So, oxidation state +3 is very common and (+III) state is ionic. However, this is not always the most stable oxidation state in the actinides.

(+III) state is not the most stable oxidation state for the first 4 elements but it is stable for later elements.
