Solution

Anhydrous is a term that is used to denote something that is free from water. Therefore anhydrous AlCl3 means aluminium chloride that is free from water. Anhydrous AlCl3 acts as a lewis acid, thus it can accept electron to form intermediates and speed up the reaction. Hence it is used as a catalyst in reactions such as friedal craft alkylation, friedal craft acylation etc.
