Question

what is a friction force ? why does it oppose a motion?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student!

Friction is an opposing force called into play, when two surfaces in contact with each other tend to slide, relative to one another. The force which resists motion is called the force of friction. When two bodies are placed one another, the irregularities of the surfaces of two bodies get interlocked. When a force is applied on one body to slide it upon another body its interlocked irregularities oppose the applied force, which appears to us in the form of friction. There are certain effects of friction when an object moves in contact with another object.

  1. Friction opposes motion
  2. Friction produces heat.
  3. Friction causes wear and tear.

Force of friction brings about wear and tear in moving bodies. It produces heat and slows down moving bodies. A lot of energy is wasted. However if there is no friction, the bodies will either slip or will not move. Even walking on the surface of the earth would have been impossible.
