Question

What is meant by double circulation?

Open in App
Solution

The double circulation means that blood passes two times during the cardiac cycle. This is common in mammals, birds, reptiles. The blood circulation is divided into two ways:

Pulmonary circulation:

The blood pumped by the right ventricle enters the pulmonary artery, whereas the left ventricle pumps the blood into the aorta. The deoxygenated blood pumped into the pulmonary artery is passed on to the lungs from where the oxygenated blood is carried by the pulmonary veins into the left atrium. This pathway constitutes the pulmonary circulation.

Systemic circulation:

The oxygenated blood entering the aorta is carried by a network of arteries, arterioles & capillaries to the tissues from where the deoxygenated blood is collected by a system of venules, veins & venecava & emptied into the right atrium. This is the systemic circulation.

More to know:

Blood circulation through heart:

The sequence of events which takes place during the completion of one heart beat is called cardiac cycle.

Blood has been used up by head, upper body parts and lower body parts and become impure (free from oxygen) and enters into the right atrium through large veins, vena cava. At the same time the pulmonary veins from lungs pour pure blood into the left atrium.

As the right and left atrium filled with blood pressure in them rises so that the valves between left atrium and left ventricle and the right atrium and right ventricle open and the atria contract. So, the right atrium pumps the impure blood to right ventricle and the left atrium pumps the pure blood to left ventricle. Then the ventricles contract immediately. Then the impure blood from right ventricle flows to the lungs through pulmonary artery and the pure blood from left ventricle is distributed to all the parts of the body through the largest artery aorta.
