Solution

Coke is obtained by the destructive distillation of coal. It is itself used as a fuel. We obtain syngas and producer gas from coke, both of which are used as fuel. Coal is a fossil fuel in which carbon is the major element present. It also contains varying amounts of hydrogen, sulphur and oxygen. The four principal type of coal found are

(1) Peat

(2) Lignite

(3) Bituminous

(4) Anthracite

Coal tar is a brown or black liquid of high viscosity, which smells of naphthalene and aromatic hydro carbons. Coal tar is among the byproducts when coal is carbonized to make coke or gasified to make coal gas. Coal tars are complex and variable mixtures of phenols, polycyclic aromatic hydro carbons, and metro cyclic compounds, about 200 substances in all. Coal tar is a thick black liquid the consistency of a thick pudding. Coal tars are by metallurgical coke or natural gas.

Products obtained from coal tar are used as starting materials for manufacturing various substances used in everyday life and in industry, like synthetic dyes, drugs, explosives, perfumes, plastics, paints, photographic materials, roofing materials, etc.

Naphthalene balls used to repel moths and other insects are also obtained from coal tar.
