Question

when 0.45 mole of a compound crystallises in HCP structure, the total no. of voids present in lattice is________.

Open in App
Solution

1 mole of compound = 6.022 × 1023 atoms.
Thus 0.45 moles will contain 0.45 × 6.022 × 1023 atoms
= 2.7099 × 1023 atoms

Number of octahedral voids = number of atoms forming unit cell
Thus octahedral voids = 2.7099 × 1023
while number of tetrahedral voids = 2 × number of octahedral voids
Tetrahedral voids = 5.4198 × 1023
Thus total number of voids = tetrahedral voids + octahedral voids
= 2.7099 × 1023 + 5.4198 × 1023
= 8. 1297 × 1023 voids
