Question

when a piece of cu metal is added to a solution of zinc sulphate ,no change takes place ,but the blue colour of copper sulphate fades away when a piece of zinc is placed in its solution

Solution

Zinc is more reactive than copper and hence placed above copper in the reactivity series. Thus, when a piece of zinc is placed in copper sulphate solution, then zinc displaces the metal from CuSO4 forming ZnSO4 and Cu metal. Following is the chemical equation for the reaction

CuSO4 + Zn → ZnSO4 + Cu

As a result of the above reaction, the blue colour of copper sulphate solution will fade away. However, copper being less reactive than zinc will not be able to displace zinc from its salt, i.e. zinc sulphate. Hence, when a piece of copper is added to zinc sulphate solution, then no reaction will take place.

ZnSO4 + Cu → no reaction
