Why are alkanes called saturated compounds whereas alkene and alkynes are called unsaturated compounds?

Saturated hydrocarbons are the ones where valencies of all the atoms are satisfied by single bonds and no further atoms can be added, whereas unsaturated compounds are the ones in which, there is at least 1 double or triple bond i.e. there is a scope for addition of atoms.
